In the second grade we have been studying the history of San Francisco. During our unit on Chinatown, the second graders designed their own door gods. Door gods are traditionally hung inside the door way of a house during Lunar New Year to welcome in good fortune. Some door gods specialize in welcoming in harmony, while others, prosperity. Door gods can also be fierce, to scare away bad fortune. After studying traditional Chinese symbolism, the second graders decided what attributes their own door gods should have.
